MIAMs

Mediation Information and Assessment Meetings (MIAMs) are individual meetings that allow you to learn about mediation and other options, such as arbitration, from a specialist divorce and separation family mediator.  The court will require proof of MIAMs and they last for 4 months.

MIAMs can be arranged very quickly and are usually held online (although in person meetings are also possible) and last

45 minutes.

£60 MIAM, per person

£80 Emergency Same Day MIAM, per person

Mediation Sessions

If mediation goes ahead, you usually have joint meetings to explore possible solutions. You can discuss anything that is important to you (which is not possible in court) and tailor make solutions.  You can be in the same room, separate rooms or online, if preferred.  Offers are confidential and cannot be used in court unless you reach agreement.

If you have a child age 8 or over, you can consider child inclusive mediation, where a child speaks to a specialist mediator if they would like their voice heard directly by a neutral, trained adult.

£100 per person per session (usually about 90 minutes)

£120 for Child Inclusive Mediation per session

Documents

If you reach agreement (69% of mediation cases reach agreement without going through contested court proceedings) you may need the following documents.  These can be for your own records, or for your solicitors if you have them and want to make the agreement binding.

£100 Memorandum of Understanding  (records your agreement)

£100 Open Statement of Financial Information (records your financial disclosures)

Voucher Scheme

£500 Government Voucher

To encourage families with children to use mediation and to reduce conflict in the home, the government has a voucher scheme that gives some families £500 towards mediation.   This cannot be used for MIAMs, but may be able to be used for mediation sessions.  This can be discussed during your MIAM.
